"Where Is Your Faith?"

I was reminded of a scene from the Gospel of Luke recently. The weather forecast predicted strong storms with heavy rains and winds up to 60 miles per hour. The news broadcasts were nearly frantic, predicting the coming weather apocalypse. Jesus’s disciples, too, faced this kind of situation.

From the Gospel of Luke: “As they sailed, He [Jesus] fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger. The disciples woke Him, saying ‘Master, Master, we are going to drown!’ He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging water, the storm subsided, and all was calm. ‘Where is your faith?’, He asked his disciples (Luke 8:23-25).

As it turned out, the predicted storm was nowhere near as bad as was forecasted. Like the news anchors, the disciples in the boat with Jesus were absorbed with the worst-case scenario, and like the disciples, the news anchors were relieved that the worst case did not happen.

I don’t know if Jesus was actually asleep, or if he was prepping his disciples for one of his “Shock-and-Awe” miracles. His question to them, “Where is your faith?” says a lot!

In our lives, we are faced with the unknown and we often fixate on the worst-case scenario. Jesus’s question to the disciples applies to us as well. We cannot see the future, or how everything will play out, but we can place trust in Jesus and in our Heavenly Father, knowing that the best outcome will be delivered. When we are asked Jesus’s question, we can confidently answer, “My faith is in You, Lord!”
