Why Love?

The Gospels all stress the importance of love. Why is this? Jesus taught us the reasons
why love is so important in His Sermon on the Mount.
In this sermon, Jesus introduces us to the concept of a loving Heavenly Father. This is
in contrast to the Old Testament version of an angry God ready to punish us if we do
not follow His commandments.
The God Jesus describes loves us as a father and desires that we return this love. This
love of God extends to all of humanity. As a parent myself, I can relate to this. I love my
children and it makes me very happy when my children demonstrate their love for me.
When my children show animosity towards each other, I feel sad. How much more is it
for God who has billions of children here on Earth?
What is God’s antidote for all of the hate and disagreement among his children? As
Jesus preached, it is love. I see the practice of loving your neighbor as a chain
reaction. You may remember the concept of a chain reaction from high school science
class. In a chain reaction, a particle strikes another particle, which splits and those
particles fly off to strike other particles, splitting them, and this reaction grows
exponentially.
When we love a neighbor, that person may be prompted to show love to others, and in
turn those recipients of love may be prompted to show love to others. Thus, the chain
reaction of love is initiated.
Lets start the chain reaction by showing love to someone today!
