Are you poor in spirit?

In the Beatitudes, Jesus tells us that being poor in spirit is blessed. Hearing this, many
of us would think “I don’t want to be poor in anything”. You might change your mind
when you learn what this really means, and why you should be poor in spirit.
We all think we are in charge of our lives, at least that is what we like to tell ourselves. It
is when we are hit with one of the severe emotional body-blows that life sends our way
that we realize we are not in charge and need outside help. Does this ring a bell?
“Poor in spirit” has been defined as another way to describe people who have the
humility to recognize they are not in control and do require outside help. Recognizing
this dependency is the first step to becoming poor in spirit. It is a way to improve your
emotional health and a way to deepen your relationship with God. I will write more
about this process in a future blog.
